Portfolio Data Engineer

About this job

As a Portfolio Data Engineer you will enable colleagues to work more efficiently by creating self-service/ automated processes and applications.  You will be a part of a high performance cross-skilled team and contribute to designing, building, testing and maintaining data pipelines and in-house software applications.

You will

  • Design, implement and maintain an automated execution capability on existing and new products within the Data and Prediction environment
  • Work closely with Portfolio Managers and Data Scientists to understand the real-world problems we’re trying to solve
  • Work closely with Platform Engineering Teams and contribute to the design and build of infrastructure and applications to solve for complex and diverse challenges within the enterprise wise data environment
  • Provide support and assist with complex problem investigation and resolution
  • Be supported by senior leaders as you drive your own development

You will need

  • Sc. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or equivalent tertiary degree
  • 3 years’ experience in software design and development
  • Proficiency in application design and development with at least one of the following languages: Python (preferred), Scala, Java
  • Proficiency in SQL and relevant RDBMS technology such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift and SQL Server
  • Working experience with AWS infrastructure (Redshift, S3, EKS, ECR)
  • Real-world understanding of data processing and storage
  • Proven ability to work with diverse teams to ensure effective implementation of projects
  • Effective communication of technical concepts
  • Comfortable working with Github and Docker
  • Experience working in a fast paced and agile environment

Bonus if you have

  • Experience in Kubernetes based service development
  • Experience working with Web Application frameworks (Flask/Django)
  • Experience working with data pipeline orchestration (Airflow, Nifi, Streamsets)
  • Knowledge of Financial Technology industry

Remote First

You will be based in South Africa.  We operate a remote first working approach where working remotely is our default way of working. We have co-working spaces available in Cape Town for collaboration and connection and for the use of those who value and want to work out of an office.  You have flexibility where to work from, as long as you have access to a reliable connection and are set up to work remotely.
