Financial Software Engineering

JOB SUMMARY

Work as a quantitative finance subject matter expert in a Financial Software Engineering team, to deliver bespoke software systems and solutions across the business.

The appointment will be made from the designated group in line with the Employment Equity Plan of Old Mutual South Africa and the specific business unit in question.

Job Outputs

  • Translate technical specifications into working code as needed, particularly financial specifications which assumes familiarity with financial markets.
  • Take ownership of projects’ mathematical correctness and appropriateness for industry use.
  • Engage with stakeholders to understand needs and draw on industry experience to reduce the time/number of iterations between prototype and useable solution.
  • Take ownership of small deliverables and/or improvements to existing systems, from problem specification to testing and deployment of solution.
  • Mentor team members on the quantitative finance aspects of projects.
  • Draw on finance industry experience to pre-empt potential errors from edge cases that can be encountered by users.
  • Draw on finance industry experience to proactively implement features and improvements desirable to users.
  • Develop a deep understanding of and maintain the GBSM’s quantitative financial models, e.g. product models, ESGs, etc.
  • Continually improve software engineering skills & knowledge in order take on more responsibility in application design over time.
  • Operates as a subject matter expert across program initiatives

Qualifications

  • BSc in a quantitative field (Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science) with a strong
  • preference for a post-graduate degree.
  • A computer science qualification will be beneficial.
  • 4+ years’ experience in the finance industry, 1+ of which included software development.

  • Working knowledge of the South African financial markets
  • Strong quantitative & problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of self-management.
  • Ability to effectively and coherently synthesize information from multiple sources.
  • Ability to deal with complexity and ambiguity.
  • Experience with object oriented and/or functional programming language.
  • Demonstrable ability to learn new languages unassisted and/or upskill familiar ones.
